At Hands at Work, our volunteers are called by God from all over the world to serve the most vulnerable in Africa. Each of us has a unique story of how we were transformed when we stepped out in faith and were obedient to this call. Brooke Wilson-Sityata from Australia shares her story and the journey that has led her to serve in South Africa.
Growing up in Melbourne with a large family of eleven siblings, my childhood was a whirlwind of moves and adventures. Despite the chaos, the presence of my siblings meant friendship and play were always within reach.
Before my journey with Hands at Work began, I was settled into the Melbourne city-life, enjoying my work, friendships, and an active church community life.
The more comfortable I became, the more I started to find myself wondering about the most vulnerable in my own community and what I had been exposed to when I was part of a team visit to Hands at Work back in the Spring of 2013. I often felt God challenging me that I still had a part to play on their behalf.
A pivotal moment came when I recalled a promise I had made, that if I ever found myself too comfortable or spiritually stagnant, I would seek out change. That realization opened my heart to new possibilities and kindled a burning desire to return to South Africa, to contribute to a cause greater than myself. This journey taught me the power of faith and the importance of listening to one's innermost desires.
In January 2020, I rejoined Hands at Work, supporting the Oshoek community in South Africa. My role involved supporting the local team in achieving their goals of effectively caring for the most vulnerable in their community.
Now, I serve on the hospitality team at the Hands Village in South Africa, known as the Hub. Regularly, I come alongside the Regional Support Team and go out to local communities to help build capacity in Community Based Organizations (CBOs) by implementing the Hands Model of supporting, mentoring, and discipling.
Hands at Work has been a revelation of true community spirit, where caring for each other is paramount. It has taught me the value of selflessness and the beatitude that emerges when one embraces new opportunities.
My time here has been filled with memorable experiences, particularly witnessing the growth and development of the youth. They are keen to forge genuine connections and build a supportive network. The relationships I've formed with the children and Care Workers are akin to family, and it's been incredibly rewarding to see our collective hopes and efforts come to fruition.
Through laughter and play, I've connected with our children and Care Workers, though it's not without its challenges. Hearing their stories has had a profound impact on me, shaping my perspective and reinforcing the importance of our mission.
Brooke lives in South Africa with her husband Sisanda. She continues to serve as a member of the hospitality team in South Africa.
